In this episode of Sweetwater’s fifth season, skillful fisherman Joey Nania and Miles “Sonar” Burghoff delve into what life is like on the waterways of Nickajack Lake in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The four species of bass along with other miscellaneous fish are abundant in these waters. Joey and Miles have both dedicated their lives to a sport they love and provide an educated assessment to beginners and experts alike. These experts take a short trip to the spillway pulling their boat along with the trusted and highly regarded B&W trailer hitch. “Chattanooga is a great spot, central location, and the fishing opportunities are about as good as you can get” says Miles Burghoff, otherwise known as “Sonar” for his father's role as the radar on the show M.A.S.H. Here are some tips and tricks to catch more fish in busy waters.

Fishing Through the Noise

To many fishermen, a serenity filled body of water that is isolated from everyday life is a main attractant to the sport. However, Joey and Miles make it evident that some of the best fishing is done in the heart of it all. The relationship between fish and structure might sound convoluted but in awestruck honesty, how could it? While at home, humans rarely stand in the center of a room to hang around or even converse, instead make their way to the ends of the room and stand near a physical object. The same argument can be made in the sense of fish in the water. With the presence of any man-made or physical object, it would make sense that a large percentage of fish in the water would spend their time in proximity to these objects. Thus, creating a large opportunity to “cast” your endeavors in the water below. “Not a good place for conversation, but a great place to catch fish” Joey explains as he pulls a largemouth bass out of the water.

In this episode, you can see they are trolling through dams, bridges, barge ties, and even active construction along the spillway. All while catching dozens of types of fish and proving their presence near physical planted objects.

Any time you get a hard structure in the river, you know fish are there.

Fishing With the Current

This episode showed some great techniques to fish with a current that is near hard structures. “With all the noise, the fish are still there, still great structure there, great current breaks and we took advantage of that,” says Miles Burghoff. Great current breaks and hard structures go hand in hand as it creates small pockets of still water for fish to rest in. It would be very hard for even the strongest and well-nourished fish to be swimming among currents 24/7, it is safe to assume that a large portion of the time the fish will be in spots with a current break.

Any time you get to a river system that has a spillway that is accessible, that is going to be a hotspot.
