5 Placements to Shoot a Turkey

Turkey season.  Time for all you bowhunters to brush up on different shot placement scenarios before you hit the trails!

A TURKEY’S VITALS ARE NO BIGGER THAN AN OVERSIZED SOFTBALL, SO SHOT PLACEMENT IS EVERYTHING.

Broadside

Turkey vitals tend to be slightly higher than the center of the mass, so place your shots accordingly. The final wing joint typically points to the heart, so use this as a frame of reference when you nock your arrow.

At full strut, it is more difficult to pinpoint the turkey’s vitals. As a general rule, draw a vertical line above the front of the bird’s legs, and intersect that line with the crease in the wings.

Facing Away

Facing Away

One of the best shots to take is when a strutting bird is facing away. The spine is facing away, and the fan of feathers point to the perfect aiming point, where the arrow will travel up the chest cavity.
